Howard freshmen Bahamian Farion Cooper and Jamaican Nicholas Haughton continued their trend of improving at each meet. A number of personal bests were recorded by the CARIFTA region duo at the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational held from Dec 4 to 5 in Virginia.
Cooper’s Bison A team finished 7th in the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:29.07 bettering their season best of 1:29.53. Cooper put in his best opening leg performance clocking 22.70. Previously his best effort had been 23.40.In the 200 yard individual medley Cooper moved from 2:05.39 to finish 14th in 2:02.77. In the 400 medley relay Farion put up a 1:02.33 breaststroke split to help the Bison A team to 4th in 3:36.66. He was 13th in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:29.06. His best finish came in the 200 yard backstroke where he stopped the clock in 2:00.01. He would team up with Haughton on the A teams for both the 800 and 400 yard freestyle relays. The 800 yard freestyle relay placed 7th with a time of 7:19.66. Cooper was timed at 1:53.93 for his second leg while Haughton anchored in 1:49.26. In the 400 yard freestyle relay The Bison A team posted 3:15.86 with Cooper stroking his way to 49.71on the 3rd leg. Haughton put up his best 400 yard freestyle relay performance clocking 48.74 on the anchor. That performance betters the 49.68 he split in October.
Haughton saw his best performance in the 500 yard freestyle where he registered first sub 5 minute to move to 4th all-time on the Howard rankings. Haughton had a massive time drop of almost 10 seconds to move from 5:04.49 to 4:54.88 and place 11th overall. In the 200 yard medley relay his B team swam 1:46.52 for 15th spot with Nicholas doing the backstroke in 27.33. In October Haughton had split 27.56 and the team had a total time of 1:47.58. In the 200 yard freestyle the Campion College graduate posted a time of 1:48.86 for 9th. In his first collegiate 1650 yard freestyle swim Haughton clocked 17:24.33.His 400 yard medley relay B team finished 16th in a time of 3:53.33 with Nicholas handling the freestyle duties with a split of 48.99.
The Bison men finished 8th with 247.5 points.
