Azura Florida Aquatics sprinter Suriname’s Raiz Tjon A Joe stood out  yesterday among the CARIFTA region swimmers as he was the only person to make an A final on Day 2 of the 2015 Speedo Short Course Junior Nationals East. Raiz blasted to his first sub 20 second 50 yard freestyle in the morning heats. Raiz rocketed to the first wall of the race in 9.61 to finish in 19.94 and be the top seed heading in to the final. His previous season and personal best was 20.10 recorded at the Florida 1A State championships in November. In the final his first 25 was not as fast, 9.75 and he finished 4th in 20.36 . That final performance was his  3rd fastest of the 2015-2016  season.  His preliminary time would have placed him 2nd .


The next best placed CARIFTA region swimmer was Bahamian Albury Higgs. Higgs who is representing SwimMac Carolina dropped 2 seconds from her season best of 2:04.47 set earlier this month to post a time of 2:02.46.That performance also beats her personal best of 2:02.54.  The University of South Carolina bound Higgs finished 8th in the C final in a time of 2:03.01. Higgs is the defending CARIFTA champion in the girls 15-17 200 metre individual medley .She won the title in 2:23.24 just beating out country woman and University of Texas freshman standout Joanna Evans who won Silver in 2:23.40.

Aruban Patrick Groters who is representing Pine Crest Swimming finished 56th in the 200 yard individual medley in 1:53.66. Groters won the Silver medal in the 15-17 age group in the 200 metre individual medley at the 2015 CARIFTA championships in Barbados behind country man and University of Missouri’s top freshman Mikel Schreuders.

Jared Fitzgerald of the Bahamas who is representing Peddie was 74th in the 50 yard freestyle in 21.48.

In relay action the Saint Andrews 400 yard medley relay team with Bahamian Izaak Bastian breaststroke 56.62 and Jamaica’s Jesse Marsh butterfly 51.60 finished 21st in 3:23.03.

Peddie A with Fitzgerald doing anchor freestyle duties finished 25th in 3:24.42. Fitzgerald split 46.99.

Speedster Raiz Tjon A Joe dropped a quick 45.27 freestyle leg to help Azura A to 3:25.64 and 29th place.

Bahamas Gershwin Greene anchored Baylor to 30th in a total time of 3:25.91 with his anchor time of 46.31.

Groters produced a 50.82 butterfly effort to help Pine Crest A to 3:28.62 and 37th overall.
