ST LUCIA’S JORDAN AUGIER HELPS TAMPA SPARTANS SET NEW DIVISION 2 200 YARD FREESTYLE RELAY RECORD

University of Tampa’s St Lucian Senior Jordan Augier was a part of the recording breaking 200 yard freestyle relay on the first day of the inaugural Spartan Invitational on Dec 18 in Clearwater Water Florida. Before the three day competition started the Division 2 record in the 200 yard freestyle relay belonged to the 2014 Drury team that had set the standard of 1:19.00. The Spartan A team lowered that to 1:18.82 and recorded a winning margin of more than 2 seconds. Augier, who is the most outstanding swimmer St Lucia has produced, had the fastest split of the relay with a blistering 19.57. All members of the Spartan quartet provided sub 20 second splits. The performance also doubles as the school record.

The Spartans would also set another Division 2 leading and school record time in the 400 yard freestyle relay. They lowered the programme standard of 2:55.11 to register a time of 2:54.73 .That performance automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Division 2 championships. This time their winning margin was almost 5 seconds. Augier made another big contribution with a 43.57 3rd leg split. That split bettered his previous best 400 yard freestyle relay performance of 44.52.

The Spartans added a third relay scalp when they won the 200 yard medley relay in 1:27.50. They just missed the school record of 1:27.45 as well as the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:26.93.Augier started the relay with a 22.75 backstroke split. The team won the event by more than 2 seconds. Their winning time puts the Spartans as the 3rd fastest team in Division 2.

In individual competition Augier was second in the 100 yard backstroke  in a season best time of 49.22.With that swim he is ranked 10th in Division 2. In the 50 yard freestyle he dropped almost a half a second off his season best to post 20.23 for 4th . He continues to track the NCAA A standard of 19.92. Jordan is now ranked  9th overall in the event heading into the Christmas break. In the 100 yard freestyle Augier finished 5th in 44.58.In the morning heats he clocked 44.21 which puts him as the 8th fastest swimmer in Division 2. Jordan had an outstanding year for St Lucia in 2015 as he rewrote the national standards in the 50 metre backstroke, 50 metre butterfly, 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre backstroke and 100 metre freestyle.

Surinamese teammate Wayne Denswil recorded season bests in his specialty stroke breaststroke. Wayne was 3rd in the 100 yard breaststroke in 56.78. He won the 200 yard breaststroke B final in a time of 2:06.22. He also won the B final of the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 1:55.38. He was faster in the heats having recorded a time of 1:54.94. He was a member of the Spartan podium party in both the 400 and 200 yard freestyle relays. His B team finished 3rd in the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:23.18. Wayne started the relay with a split of 21.36. He also started the 400 freestyle relay. His opening leg was 46.24.The B team again finished 3rd with a time of 3:02.27. In the longest relay of the meet, the 800 yard freestyle relay Denswil opened the race for the C team with a 1:45.24 leg. They eventually finished 5th in 7:00.62.

Also competing at the meet was Florida Southern College’s Jamaican freshman Nico Campbell. Nico who is the senior national record holder in the 200 metre freestyle recorded season bests at the meet as well as a win the 800 yard freestyle relay. Campbell split 1:40.88 on the second leg to help his school win the relay in 6:37.16 just out touching the Spartan relay team that was timed in 6:37.78. That 800 yard freestyle relay win places Florida Southern as the 5th fastest in Division 2. In the individual 200 freestyle race he dropped from 1:41.60 to place 3rd in the final in 1:40.32 a NCAA B qualifying time. He moved from 46.59 to clock 46.09 and win the B final of the 100 yard freestyle in another season best. He was also victorious in the 50 yard freestyle B final in a time of 21.23.His best effort in the 50 yard freestyle would come however be in the 200 yard freestyle relay. He put up a time of 21.15 to help the B team to 4th place. Campbell would clock sub 46 second splits in both the 400 yard freestyle and medley relays. In the medley relay Nico was timed at 45.23 to help the B team to 2nd in 3:21.22. In the 400 yard freestyle relay his B team finished 4th in 3:09.00 .This time his 2nd leg split was timed at 45.52.

 

The Spartans won the competition with 1468 points. Florida Southern College was runner up with 899 points.
