JAMAICA’S NICO CAMPBELL HELPS FLORIDA SOUTHERN TO TURN BACK EMORY IN FIRST MEET OF 2016

Jamaican freshman Nico Campbell’s Florida Southern started the New Year with a win over Emory on Friday. Campbell who holds the senior national record in the 200 metre freestyle finished 2nd in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:42.11.The event was won by team mate Jesus Marin. At the 2014 and 2015 CARIFTA swimming championships Nico won consecutive Silver medals in the 15-17 boys 200 metre freestyle events. That broke a more than 5 year medal drought in that age group as the last time a Jamaican had won a medal was at the 2006 Championships when Brad Hamilton won Gold.
In the 100 yard freestyle Campbell placed 3rd in 47.21.Nico ended the meet on top of the medal podium as his A team of Edson Lima, Campbell, Marin and Antonio Nunez won in a time of 3:07.80. Nico’s 2nd leg split was timed at 46.80.Florida Southern triumphed with a scoreline of 151 to 94.
