Trinidad and Tobago sophomore Emiro Goosen and his University of Florida Gators battled Florida State and its swimmers which included Aruban Olympian Jemal LeGrand and Suriname’s Rafael Van Leeuwaarde in a long course dual meet in Gainesville Florida on Saturday January 2
The meet saw Goosen recording a season best in the 200 metre freestyle. Emiro lowered his previous season best of 1:58.79 to 1:58.21 and finished 4th overall.
In the 100 metre freestyle he swam as an exhibition swimmer and clocked 52.97 .That time was his 2nd fastest time in the event for the season. In the 400 metre medley relay his Gators C finished 6th overall in 4:01.99.His butterfly split was 59.11. In the 400 metre freestyle relay the C team was the 5th fastest team .They had a total time of 3:34.52 with Emiro leading off the team in a time of 53.42. Goosen while attending Bolles High school set a national high school record in 2012 in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:19.27. His teammates included American Ryan Murphy, Singapore standout Joseph Schooling and Canadian Santo Condorelli
Rafael Van Leeuwaarde had a best finish of 3rd in the 100 metre breaststroke at the meet .He clocked a time of 1:07.17. The former Charlotte United Christian Academy student was 4th in the 200 metre breaststroke in a time of 2:29.82.His Seminoles B team finished 4th in the 400 metre medley relay in a time of 3:53.69. The Paramaribo native’s breaststroke leg was timed at 1:05.84.
LeGrand who represented Aruba at the London 2102 Olympics had his best showing in the 400 metre freestyle relay. His B team was 4th in a time of 3:34.17.The Sagemont High School graduate split on the 2nd leg was timed at 53.64.He was 6th in the individual 100 metre freestyle in 54.68. The Sannidad native was also 6th in the 200 metre freestyle in 2:00.95.
The Gators won the clash against their in state rivals triumphing 188 to 109.
