The 2016 Walter Rogers Age Group Swimming Championships got underway at National Aquatic Centre in Jamaica on Tuesday February 9 with the distance events. The championships is the last meet locally in which swimmers will have the opportunity to qualify for the CARIFTA Games which will be held Martinique from Martinique, March 23-27.
In the girls 800 metre freestyle event Britney Williams of Swimaz Aquatics emerged as the fastest on the night among all age group. The Wolmerian who is the top distance freestyler locally won in a time of 10:26.36 to top the 13-14 age group. Finishing 2nd in the 13-14 age group as well as overall was Naomi Eaton of the Wahoo Swim Club in 10:37.06. Third fastest overall and again in the 13-14 age group was Sage Sinclair of the Y Speedos Swim Club in 10:53.19.
In the boys 1500 metre freestyle the fastest time again came from the 13-14 age group. The top performer was Chester Adams of the Y Speedos Swim Club. Adams who attends Jamaica College had a major time drop as he cut his time by more than half a minute to record his first sub 19 minute clocking of 18:58.65.Also dropping half a minute from his time was Delroy Tyrrell of the Tidal Wave Aquatics club from Trinidad and Tobago. He recorded a personal best of 19:10.69. Third fastest on the day and winner of the 15 and over age group was Bryce Butler (Tornadoes Swim Club) who clocked 19:46.08.
