The second day of action at the SEC championships saw the Aruban duo of Jordy Groters and Mikel Schreuders in action in the 50 yard freestyle.
Jordy would record a season best in the event of 20.24.That bettered the 20.34 he recorded at the Tennessee and placed him 28th overall. Mikel who has only competed in this event only once prior to the Championships clocked 20.71 for 39th overall. It was just off the 20.69 he clocked in November 2015.
Over the years the CARIFTA region has produced champions in the sprint event. In 1993 Enrico Linscheer of Suriname took the title for the Florida Gators in 1993 with a time of 20.14. For the women Bahamian Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace who represented Auburn University had been crowned Conference Champion twice in 2011 with a time of 21.34 and 2012 with a time of 21.35. Arianna’s 21.34 survived this year’s Championships and still stands as the Conference record and meet record.
