JORDAN AUGIER AND WAYNE DENSWIL WIN GOLD IN THE 200 YARD MEDLEY FOR THE SPARTANS ON THE OPENING DAY OF THE 2016 SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The CARIFTA region swimmers worked their way to the podium at yet another collegiate Conference Championships. This time it was the University of Tampa duo of St Lucia’s Jordan Augier and Suriname’s Wayne Denswil at the Sunshine State Conference Championships which got under way yesterday at the YMCA of Central Florida Aquatic Centre.

Augier backstroke 23.17, Denswil breaststroke 24.99, Runar Borgen butterfly 20.87 and Martin Hammer 19.60 brought home the win in a time of 1:28.63. That betters the 2015 placing for Jordan and Wayne when they had finished with the Bronze medal.

Augier who also make his way to the final of the 50 yard freestyle where he clocked NCAA Division 2 B cuts in both the heats and the Championship final .His morning swim was timed at 20.43 and he finished 8th in the final in 20.45.His previous best at these Championships was 20.62 done in 2015.Teammate Denswil was 29th in the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 1:56.86.

Jamaican freshman Nico Campbell set a new personal best in the 50 yard freestyle clocking 20.81. It beats his previous lifetime best of 21.15 and was also under the NCAA Division 2 B standard of 20.91.His Florida Southern College B team would win the B final of the 200 yard medley relay. Nico clocked an anchor leg freestyle time of 20.47 as they took the race in 1:31.00.

Florida Institute of Technology’s Bahamian freshman Drew Bastian lowered his lifetime best in the 50 yard freestyle from 22.29 to 21.93 to finish 29th.His Panthers B team finished 3rd in the B final of the 200 yard medley relay in a time of 1:32.33. Drew’s breaststroke split was timed at 25.59.
