Suriname’s Olympian Evita Leter started off her 2016-2017 collegiate season with a win at the All Florida Invite which was held from Friday Sep 23 to Sunday 25 at Nova Southeastern University.
Evita’s win came in the 100 yard breaststroke for her school Florida Gulf Coast University. Competing in the A final she grabbed the initiative with a 30.38 split. The field could not overcome her early advantage and she went on to win 1:05.16.
The Eagles senior would get other podium positions in relay action. Her 400 yard medley relay A team of Barbara Caraballo (backstroke), Fanny Teijonsalo (butterfly) and Katie Latham (freestyle) stopped the clock in a total time of 3:54.28 for 3rd place. Leter’s breaststroke split was 1:05.76. In the shorter 200 yard medley relay Evita posted the fastest breaststroke split of 29.07 to have her Eagles in the lead. However they would be over taken by the University of Florida team that won in 1:43.36. Her teammates Fanny Teijonsalo (backstroke 26.09) Yee Wong (butterfly 25.34) and Katie Latham (freestyle 23.25) helped to finish runner up in a time of 1:43.75.
In the 200 yard freestyle relay she started the relay in 24.58 to help the B team to 6th place in a total time of 1:37.87.In the individual 50 yard freestyle Evita was 3rd in the B final in 24.86 .She had posted 24.76 in the heats.
The 100 yard freestyle saw her placing 22nd in 54.10. She was 20th in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:36.84.
At the Rio 2016 Olympics Leter competed in the 100 metre breaststroke where she placed 37th in a time of 1:14.96.
