Newly minted Olympian Joanna Evans of The Bahamas opened her season for the University of Texas on Oct 21 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Indiana. The occasion was a tri meet which had the Longhorns racing against the University of Indiana and the University of Florida. The meet was contested in the 50 metre pool.

The sophomore started her campaign with a win in the 800 metre freestyle. She had split times of 4:24.38 and 4:25.78 to have total time of 8:50.16. Joanna won the event by over 2 seconds and bettered her 2015 time of 8:54.12.

In the 400 metre freestyle she split 2:06.08 on her way to a victory in 4:19.55 where she enjoyed yet another 2 second plus margin of victory. Evans was yet again faster than her 2015 performance of 4:20.30.

The 200 metre freestyle saw the Freeport native placing 2nd in 2:02.51 (split time 1:00.21).That was big improvement from 2015 when she posted a time of 2:06.25.

 

Her Longhorns B team swam for exhibition purposes in the 400 metre relay and clocked the 2nd fastest time of the day. The team of Remedy Rule 57.40, Evans 57.91, Anelise Diener 58.93 and Claire Adams 57.59 had a total time of 3:51.83.

The Longhorn ladies beat the Florida Gators 185 to 96 but went down to the Hoosiers 132 to 49.

Evans is the fastest woman of all time from the English speaking CARIFTA region in the 400, 800 and 1500 metre freestyle events.  She also set the best times done by an English speaking Caribbean woman at the Olympics when she posted national records in Rio in the 200 and 400 metre freestyle races in times of 2:01.27 and 4:07.60 respectively.
