RECORDMonday April 17 saw the Jamaican team setting Two Championship records and adding to their overall medal haul. The third day of competition at the Betty Kelly-Kenning Aquatic Centre in The Bahamas saw Team Jamaica winning Two Gold, Three Silver and Two Bronze medals to have an overall medal count of Eight Gold, Six Silver and Seven Bronze medals. With 21 medals in hand Jamaica was Sixth overall with 392 points.
It would be the strong 11-12 age group that would get Jamaica’s first Gold medal of the evening’s championship finals. The team of Zaneta Alvaranga, Paig’e Lewis, Joshua Alleyne and Nathaniel Thomas held off a spirited challenge from Team Bahamas to take the Gold medal in a time of 4:10.28 to the home nation’s 4:10.87. As it was the inaugural event it will stand as the CARIFTA record and Jamaican national record. The team had set the regional standard in the morning heats with a time of 4:14.25 .That made it Three Championships Records for the team and the Sixth national age group record. Anchor leg Thomas had the following words on behalf of the team about setting the record twice
“It feels exciting to set a record and then break it again in the finals.I think the team did very well overall and next time we can do better”.
The 15-17 girls have been on fire in the relays winning all the relays since the Games started and yesterday’s finals they continued their hot streak. The team of Britney Williams, Angara Sinclair, Bryanna Renuart and Annabella Lyn flexed their muscles to win the 800 metre freestyle relay in a new National and CARFITA record time of 8:50.53. That Gold medal winning performance made it a perfect 3 for 3. The old national record of 8:56.38 was set in 2016 by the team of Kelsie Campbell, Bryanna Renuart, Shaun Johnson and Annabella Lyn at the CARIFTA Championships. That was also the last time the 15-17 girls topped the event. The old regional record was held by the 2014 Aruban team of Ginayla Arends, Olympian Daniella Van Den Berg, sister Andrea Van Den Berg and Rebecca Maduro. The 15-17 girls accounted for CARFITA record number Four and National record number Seven with their win. Speaking on behalf of her team anchor Lyn had the following thoughts
“I am really proud of myself and the whole team. We went in the race with little expectations we just expected to try our hardest and everyone do what we had to. In the race we realized we could we win this .It was an amazing feeling to have all those people behind you pushing you on. Doing the anchor leg I knew all my teammates were behind me pushing me to the record and the Gold medal”.
In the 50 metre breaststroke Cameron Brown added another breaststroke Silver medal to his 2017 CARIFTA tally after taking the Silver in the 200 metre event. He was second in a new personal best time of 31.43. It is the first medal in the event since 2012 when Kevaughn Campbell won gold in 2012. Brown continues to track the 2004 national record of 31.05 set by Brad Hamilton.
Zaneta Alvaranga won Silver in the girl’s 11-12 100 metre freestyle in a new personal best time of 1:01.25.
